Welsh Food Treats at Penally Abbey

One of the best things about taking a short break in Pembrokeshire is the amazing range of outstanding Welsh produce in the region. From traditional butchers and fishmongers to small scale artisan companies, the list of foodie treats is vast. Having so much provenance to select is a nice problem to have for the chefs and staff at Penally Abbey! It can be a challenge, but also allows us to hand pick the very best of the region to give guests an outstandingly fresh taste of Welsh cuisine on our menus. Here are some of our favourite Pembrokeshire food suppliers and foodie treats that can be enjoyed at the hotel:

Perfect Preserves by Coedcanlas

Coedcanlas

If most of the honey and preserves you buy these days are mass produced and standardised, here is company with a refreshingly different approach. Based on the Pembrokeshire coast, they produce honey and condiments the old fashioned way. This begins with some 90 wooden hives that yield the most delicious organic honey, carefully kept to retain the excellent, delicate flavours that come from a pure local environment.

Equally popular at Penally Abbey are the company’s exquisite preserves. The marmalade, for example, is made from premium Seville Oranges and still cooked the old way in copper pans. It is wonderfully tangy stuff! Join us for breakfast at the hotel and we’re sure your taste buds will agree.

Great Welsh Beers and Ciders

Besides a carefully selected list of wines from around the world, we also like to keep a close eye on great Welsh beers and ciders. Long before the current vogue for craft ales, South West Wales had some of the best breweries in Britain. Naturally, we are as keen as our guests to find the best, with regular additions to our beer and cider list to keep things interesting.

Current favourites include ales from Gower and Penlon Breweries, with various bottle conditioned beers and organic ciders. Tenby has recently been graced with not only one, but two, fantastic micro breweries, Tenby Brewery and Tenby Harbour brewery. Our staff are always delighted to recommend something to suit your taste buds, while Penally Abbey’s delightfully relaxed snug bar is the ideal place to socialise and sample a drop of something new.

From Beach to Bistro

We are also especially spoiled here in South West Wales to have access to excellent produce direct from Tenby. It is wonderful for our kitchen team to be able to take their pick from local fishermen. It is this careful selection process, along with the craft of our chefs that mark Penally Abbey out as one of the very best seafood restaurants in Tenby and the surrounding area. Our menus have ideas as fresh as the catch, and whether you order mussels or monkfish it will often be cooked on the day it was caught.
