Romantic Places to Visit in Pembrokeshire, South West Wales

When whisking a loved one away for a bit of time out, Pembrokeshire is a great place for romantic breaks in Wales. With its un-spoiled, wild and rugged coastline, full of beautiful spots to perch with a bottle of wine or a salty bag of chips watching the sun set, it is special and hugely romantic.

At just a short distance from the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, Penally Abbey is a great location to explore. Here are some of our favourite romantic places to go in Pembrokeshire, Wales.

BARAFUNDLE BAY BEACH

Barafundle Beach

This beach has won numerous competitions worldwide due to its outstanding natural beauty. This cove a few miles along the coastline from Penally Abbey is sheltered and has made it into the top 25 beautiful beaches in the world. What’s not to love? For those who don’t want to make the hike down onto the beach can sit at the top, crack open a bottle and embrace the views before you.

Personal Tip

In my opinion high tide is the best time, every time! Ridiculously pretty and romantic when the sea is in and in the evenings in the summer it is particularly special, the ultimate picnic spot!

Directions

Follow directions for Stackpole Quay. Barafundle Bay parking is with the National Trust. It is a 15 minute walk from the car park to the beach.

FRESHWATER WEST BEACH

I could wax lyrical about this particular spot for days. Whatever the weather, it always charms visitors. During the winter months the wild wind from the Irish Sea results in crazy waves that pour in and blows cobwebs, stresses or worries well away. On a clear day it has one of the best sunsets in the world…not that we are biased of course! In the winter months it sets directly over the sea but all year round it promises to take your breath away and to be spellbindingly romantic.

Personal Tip

Head to Café Mor which is located on the road by the beach (Open 10am-6pm). It has the BEST lobster rolls and burgers (with the addition of their famous seaweed butter) in Pembrokeshire and won best street food in Britain in 2014! Forget your picnic and indulge in fantastic local produce with the best view. If you get down there on a clear evening (all the locals descend on ‘Freshwest’ when the sky is looking perfect for a sunset) and pick a spot in the squishy grass on the hill where there are lots of secret dips. Here you can shelter from the wind and have a complete private viewing. I personally like to accompany sunsets with fish and chips and an ice cold beer. My idea of straight up romance!

Directions

Head out towards Hundleton and Castlemartin and follow the signs to Freshwater West.

Parking is free here too which is great (lots of people head down and sit in their cars with flasks of tea and watch the stormy weather across the beach).

BOSHERSTON LILY PONDS & THE EIGHT ARCHED BRIDGE

Lily Ponds in the depths of winter

This idyllic spot takes you away from cars, crowds and any hustle and bustle. With its big still lake covered in water lilies in the warmer months and paths surrounding it, it creates the ultimate romantic spot to bring anyone special. On the left side of the lake a big grassy hill looks out over the lake towards the sea with just woodland and greenery between. Here is the perfect spot for a picnic. You can walk around the ponds towards the Eight Arched Bridge where one of the ladies from our front of house team got engaged!

Personal Tip

Pop to the Bosherston Tea Rooms after your picnic for a delicious piece of homemade sponge made fresh though-out the day, everyday – to the point where you sometimes have to wait while they ice it. The St Govan’s Inn pub next door is also a fantastic spot to sit outside with a cold beer – on summer evenings it gets so busy people sit on the walls and floor outside to watch the sunset.

Directions:

Follow signs to Bosherston up St.Daniels Hill out towards Castlemartin and Hundleton. Their is parking just on the left after the church down the hill.

STRAWBERRY LANE

The closest romantic picnic spot to the hotel – just a ten minute walk (uphill) to the fields above Penally. Sit on the perfectly placed bench overlooking Caldey island – ideal for sunsets or a sunrise coffee, as this recent picture suggests.
