Christmas Events in PembrokeshireChristmas at Penally

The festive season is undoubtably on it’s way here at Penally. Gradually, the Christmas spirit is tiptoeing in, to nestle itself in firmly under the eaves of the hotel. The trees are going up, decorations are adorning the fireplaces, and our maintenance man Wayne is donning his fabulous array of festive jumpers. The hotel at this time of year is cosy and intimate, with candles and the lights from the tree creating a soft glow. In the dark winter evenings an ambient warmth illuminates our guest areas, where visitors relax with a tipple by the fire. Penally Abbey is a wonderful place to spend the festive season but the local area also has a lot to offer for things to do. Christmas in Pembrokeshire is a community affair and celebrations bring people together from far and wide.

Here we’ve compiled a brief collection of some of our favourite things to do at Christmas in Pembrokeshire.

Christmas Markets and Fairs

Christmas markets and fairs in Pembrokeshire are the perfect way to get you into the festive spirit. They run locally from the end of November through December and really help to kick start the festivities. They are set at various locations throughout the county, held against the backdrop of some of Pembrokeshire’s famous castles or along its beautiful harbour fronts. They’re great places to pick up gifts too, with many locally made crafts and foods. Visits from Father Christmas mean a truly special day out for younger children too.

Christmas Shopping in Narberth

Narberth high street is a treasure trove, packed with boutique, independent shops. You’ll find an abundant selection of precious trinkets, local art, and beautiful bits and pieces. Perfect for special presents or simple stocking fillers. Make your way from the top of town, starting with White Boutique's fabulous choice of clothing and accessories. A visit to theGolden Sheaf Gallery is a must to admire not only the gorgeous items on sale but their elegant Christmas decor. These of course are just a couple of the wonderful choice of shops. I could spend a whole day browsing in Narberth and the time spent between shopping is just as satisfying. In Narberth you are spoilt for choice with an array of cafes, delicatessens and whole food suppliers. Eat tapas atUltracomidia and choose from their impressive selection of Spanish wines, olives, dried meats, cheeses and more. If you can find the room afterwards, choose one of the gorgeous homemade cakes from Plum & Vanilla. Where the choice of food is as delicous as it is beautiful with a rainbow selection of salads, teas and cakes. All fresh, organic and ethically sourced. They've also recently opened the Plum & Vanilla deli next door to the cafe.

The Boxing Day Swim and New Years Day Swim

Each year hundreds of swimmers don their fancy dress and dive into the waters of Tenby’s North beach. For many it’s a tradition, for others it’s a sure fire way to shake off the excesses of the day before. Spirits are always high in Tenby on the morning of the swim, no matter how cold the day. For good reason too as the swim is a great opportunity for people to raise money for chosen charities. Choose to take the plunge or just watch from the safety of the shore where you’ll be surrounded by families and locals enjoying the spectacle. If you want to make a day of it then Tenby is always buzzing throughout the hours that follow. Booking at restaurants for lunch and dinner is advised as the town will be particularly busy. For those of you staying with us later in December and over the New Year, there is a similar event on New Years Day in Saundersfoot which has become increasingly popular over past years.

St Davids Cathedral Lovelight Concert and Carol Services

There aren’t many better settings to enjoy Carol services than from St David’s Cathedral. It’s grandeur and history as the home of Wales’s patron Saint make it a spectacular venue for a Christmas celebration. The Cathedral is open to the public as usual in December but also has a few special events scheduled too. Including the Tenovus Cancer Care Concert on Friday 2nd of December. Join from 7:30pm to see performances from harpist Catrin Finch, Haverfordwest’s Male Voice Choir and soprano Gwawr Edwards. Tickets are £15 and can be bought from the Tenovus Cancer Care website.

Other carol services at the Cathedral include:

27th November - the Advent Procession and Carol Service

3rd December Goodwick Brass Band Concert 7.30pm

10th December Dyfed Choir Concert "The Messiah" by Handel 7.30pm

17th December Organ Recital by Simon Pearce 7.30pm

For those not wanting to stray too far from the Hotel, St Nicholas and St Teilo Church in Penally is hosting a carol service on Tuesday the 13th December with mince pies and mulled wine.
