Updates from the first two months of 2016
Over the past 6 weeks Penally Abbey has been through a total whirlwind of various activity, noise, carnage and pressure...and we're far from finished! As I finally relax into the squishy comfort of Receptions armchair, on our first fairly quiet evening since opening, I feel unsure of where to start when it comes to filling in our readers on all our news.
There has been lots of dust, lots of singing, hundreds, potentially thousands (!?) of Patsy's sandwiches demolished and endless banging, smashing but most of all, laughing. Although I would be fibbing if I said there weren't a few fleeting moments of near breakdowns. Bathroom mirrors smashing minutes before guests arrival being one of them...!
So, from the beginning of our epic start to the year, January 2nd, we said goodbye to our last New Years Eve guests and in turn welcomed our fantastic annually returning builders to the hotel.
In a blur of cups of tea, large chip shop orders and a very drunken 40th birthday celebration, we have gutted the en-suite bathrooms throughout the main hotel, re-decorated and refreshed several of the bedrooms, built a new laundry block and finally built a brand new courtyard space and second bar.
As well as some photos of this years refurbishment I have added some before and after pictures from last year too. It seems fitting to as we are just a few days away from our hotel launch party. Celebrations all round.
We are very excited about our brand new bathrooms!
Room 6 and 7 bathrooms totally ripped out.
And then replaced...
Room 3 Bathroom
After beautifully finishing the bathrooms and re-opening the hotel the boys moved on to building the courtyard!
The courtyard is the part of the build that I am particularly excited about. It has been such a huge structural job and will be the most fantastic space when it is finished, with high ceilings, cosy corners and huge doors opening onto the courtyard itself. It is a space that will mean we can be more creative as a business and hold a never-ending list of different events. From music nights to art classes, pilates weekends, private parties and conferences - this is going to be a place that we are going to have some serious fun with.
With the end product in sight (less than 2 weeks and counting) here are some photos which show how it has developed.
Lucas and Fran the archeologist checking for any interesting finds...
The ceiling being held up pre-steel arrival.
Celebratory team photo after the steel was in!
An enourmous hole was dug into the side of the hill to make room for our new loo block.
Here the concrete is going down.
A cheeky 40th birthday celebration interupted the build for about an hour...
What the space is starting to look like.
Keep an eye on our social media pages (Facebook, Twitter and Instagram) and our website for photos and updates on the finished courtyard!
I think I could probably keep uploading photos and talk about endless things that have happened over the last 2 months for a while. Huge thanks has to go to our builders, the numerous outside tradesmen that have been involved, Jewsons and the Plumb centre where Lucas has lived (we think) for days at a time, and to the chefs and kitchen team who stopped everyone from going hungry.
Also, a separate and enormous thanks to our fantastic house keeping girls who cleaned up after EVERYONE and EVERYTHING.
For now, I shall leave you with the lasting images of the back office team, who have kept the phones manned and worked in ridiculous, dusty and noisy conditions whilst still giving an air of professionalism (although at times coming across quite delirious!).
The back office
Alison our receptionist enjoying her sound proofers!
Lizzie being fed wine as she takes endless bookings into the night!
The moment where I got bored of not being in the midst of the action and got involved...for five minutes.
The office the week we were opening. Enough said.
We're back open, have lots of plans and are looking forward to celebrating it all this weekend!
